PNG says Australian police may be back in two months

Papua New Guinea's Police Minister, Bire Kimisopa, says Australian police could return to PNG within the next two months.

Under a multi-million dollar assistance programme, about 150 Australian policemen were sent to PNG before the Supreme Court's May ruling that their immunity from prosecution was in breach of PNG constitution.

The police officers then left PNG and an amended package should be signed off next month.

Mr Kimisopa has been quoted as saying the Australians could resume duties in PNG as early as January.
