Fiji nurses angry at government reneging on pay deal

Fiji's nurses could strike again after what they say is the government's failure to honour the agreement they reached in their last strike in August.

The general secretary of the Fiji Nurses Association, Kuini Lutua, says the nurses are very unhappy because the government is challenging the award agreement reached with the arbitrator last August.

She says at the same time, the Government has cut the nurses salaries for the three days they were on strike in August.

Mrs Lutua says they had hoped that the negotiated agreement, which would have benefitted the lower paid nurses particularly, would have been paid out before Christmas.

She says the Nurses Association is very concerned about the latest moves by the Government.

"Why we are saying this is the nurses are so poorly paid in this country. They are overworked. We are very very concerned because the number who have handed in their resignations and are leaving for Australia, New Zealand, the United Arab Emirates is just increasing every month."
