Fiji's Electoral Commission is proposing a Code of Conduct which, if adopted, would prohibit political parties from making racial remarks to attract voters.
The Sunday Times reports that the Electoral Commission chairman, Graham Leung, has tabled an election Code of Conduct at a consultation meeting with political parties.
Mr Leung says he hopes the parties adopt the Code because it aims to ensure a higher degree of fairness, integrity and orderliness into the electoral process.
The Code includes a ban on inflammatory or threatening language, inciting hatred and appealing to regional, religious, ethnic or gender divisions in society.
Mr Leung says ideally the Code of Conduct should be embedded in legislation, but in the meantime there is nothing preventing political parties from subscribing to it.
