Marshall Islands to welcome controversial church leader

8:14 am on 3 December 2005

The controversial head of the Unification Church, Reverend Sun Myung Moon, is set to arrive in the Marshall Islands today.

Many Christian church pastors in the country have criticised the Moon organisation.

A special ceremony sponsored by a local Moon organisation in honor of their leader's visit to Majuro will be held this evening at the conference room at the Nitijela or parliament.

Government officials say that Mr Moon's

one-day visit is not a state-sponsored event, but rather a stop as part of a tour promoting world peace.

Reverend Moon is due to visit Vanuatu on Monday, where government officials have said he won't be able to use the government's airport VIP lounge or other government venues.
