Fiji police have charged two former senior fisheries officials with abuse of office in connection with a fishing licence scam.

Radio Fiji reports that the deputy commissioner of police, Moses Driver, has identified the officials as the permanent secretary of fisheries and the director of fisheries in 2003.

Mr Driver says the identities of the two came up as investigations continued in seven further cases of abuse.

The two have been suspended and ordered to appear in court on the 22nd of this month.

Mr Driver says when the fishing licences of a local company expired at the end of 2002, the two officials allowed it to continue fishing in January the following year without paying the fees for a new licence.
