French Polynesian opposition denies defections

French Polynesia's opposition Tahoeraa Huiraatira Party says there has been no formal resignation of two of its assembly members.

Teina Maraeura and Michel Yip who are both representatives from the Tuamotu archipelago were not present during the budget debate this week.

Mr Yip had earlier told local radio that they would be independents in the assembly and join others from the outer islands.

But the Tahoeraa's Edouard Fritch told local television there has been no official word from them and that the party still has 23 members in the 57-seat assembly.
