Tongan group wants reply to democracy demands within a month

A group of democracy campaigners in Tonga has given the King until the end of January to respond to its proposed constitutional amendments.

Yesterday, members of a group calling itself the National Committee for Political Reform presented a document to the Palace Office containing a model of a fully-elected parliament and necessary amendments to the law and constitution.

A committee member, Dr 'Aivi Puloka, handed the document over to the Assistant Private Secretary to the King, Sateki 'Ahio.

The head of the group and MP, Akilisi Pohiva, says they hope the King will respond positively to their submission early in the new year.

Mr Pohiva says if he does not, more action will follow although he would not elaborate.

"We hope for the best and also prepare for the worst, say if the King is wise he should respond this time."
