Wallis and Futuna lawmakers pass budget

8:15 am on 10 December 2005

The territorial assembly in Wallis and Futuna has passed its 2006 budget, totalling US$28.3 million.

The bulk of the budget is dedicated to operating expenses, and the remainder for investments aimed at increasing productivity.

Next year, on Futuna island, the tiny domestic airport of Vele is to get a US$9 million facelift that could eventually turn it into an international point of entry.

The de facto Opposition leader, Albert Likuvalu, described the new budget a "positive" one, but regretted that not enough had been done, in his view, to promote investment.
