A man is being held without bail at the Tafuna Correctional Facility in American Samoa for allegedly running over his girlfriend last week.
Police arrested the defendant from his home in Alofau the same night.
The victim was admitted into the hospital's intensive care unit in critical condition.
Eye witnesses said the two were having an argument and the woman walked away.
The car driven by the defendant, struck her, she fell down then the vehicle ran over her.
The victim had tyre tracks on her stomach.
The defendant told police that his girlfriend had hit him with her purse and he retaliated by running her over with his vehicle.
