The World Meteorological Organisation says there were fewer typhoons in the Pacific Ocean than usual in the last year.
The organisation says this year has been the second warmest on record, with evidence that the Caribbean Sea was warming and producing more frequent, intense hurricanes.
The WMO Secretary General, Michel Jarraud, says global warming will lead to more heatwaves.
Mr Jarraud says at this stage the honest scientific answer for hurricanes is that they don't know.
