US congressmen call on African nations to request UN review of Papua

4:35 pm on 19 December 2005

American Samoa's Congressman Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin and New Jersey Congressman Donald Payne have called upon African nations to request a review of the United Nations' actions in Indonesia's Papua province.

The Congressmen's request comes in response to a letter they sent to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in March requesting his support for a review of the 1969 Act of Free Choice under which Papua became incorporated into Indonesia.

In September, the Secretary General informed the Congressmen that he would consider a review of the 1969 Act and the UN's conduct in West Papua if the General Assembly called for it.

For this reason, the Congressmen have called on African nations to initiate a call for a General Assembly review.
