Ex-combatants in PNG's Bougainville end election office pay protest

12:48 pm on 20 December 2005

A report from Papua New Guinea say former combatants in the Bougainville Resistance have returned the keys to the Electoral Commission office in the provincial capital, Buka, after a week-long pay protest.

The National newspaper reports the former militants expect the national government to pay the three million US dollars they claim they're owed for providing services to security forces during the civil war.

The Electoral Commissioner Andrew Trawen said the decision to return the keys showed the group's desire to resolve problems through peaceful means.

Mr Trawen says his office will now go ahead and plan a by-election month for the Bougainville provincial seat in the national parliament.
