American Samoa doctors protest against recent increase in hospital fees

8:12 am on 24 December 2005

Twelve doctors in American Samoa are concerned that the recent increase in hospital fees is endangering the health of residents.

The group has written to Governor Togiola, asking him to implement quickly, a health insurance scheme for the territory.

According to the doctors, the increase in hospital charges is keeping patients away from the hospital until it's too late, driving them to use herbal medicine that often results in further complications.

The doctors have proposed that the government considers universal insurance coverage for all residents.

They also want strengthening of immigration laws so that employers and sponsors pay for the health costs of people they bring into the territory.
