New Caledonian man bequeaths US$1.6m to French villagers

Inhabitants of a small village in north western France are pondering how to spend US$1.6m bequeathed by a former resident who's died in New Caledonia.

Jean Kerfers left the sum to the village of Mael-Crahaix in Brittany, which only a little more than a thousand people call home.

He had left the village after the Second World War to work in Australia, and he died childless at the age of 80 in Noumea earlier this year.

The village mayor, Stephan Rivoal, says a tax lawyer has been hired to handle the legacy.

Mr Rivoal says the local council will seek the advice of Mr Kerfers' only known living relative, a woman cousin aged 90, about how best to commemorate the gift.
