Reports from the Papua New Guinean city of Lae say police have shot dead the prime suspect in the murder of the Australian expatriate and local businessman Russell Green.

Police said Raka Dick was killed when officers exchanged fire with members of an armed gang who had robbed a woman at a roadblock on Christmas Eve.

Mr Dick was wanted for questioning over the killing of Russell Green, the general manager of the largest supplier of poultry in PNG.

Mr Green's body had been found with stab wounds on the verandah of his house in Lae seven weeks ago.
