The jailed governor of Madang in Papua New Guinea, James Yali, was allowed out of prison yesterday to chair a meeting of the provincial government.

Yali is awaiting sentencing next month after being convicted for raping a young woman in his office in October.

The Post-Courier newspaper reports Yali was escorted out of jail under warders' escort to chair the provincial supply bill session.

The Acting Correctional Services Commissioner Martin Balthasar told the paper the session concerned pay issues for public servants.
