Convicted PNG governor to appear in court again

4:55 pm on 9 January 2006

In Papua New Guinea, convicted governor James Yali is due to appear before the court again, the day after he is sentenced for rape.

Yali is due to be sentenced on January 17 for his convicted rape of a female about a year ago, and will re-appear in court the next day on a separate matter.

He is being sued by 220 settlers who were evicted from two settlements in November 2002 by armed policemen under the instruction of the Madang provincial government.

Yali will be the first defendant in a case where the settlers are claiming over 1 million US dollars in damages to properties caused during the eviction.

Meanwhile a senior correctional officer in the highlands has called on Correctional Services Minister to investigate the controversy surrounding the release of Yali to chair a provincial assembly last month.
