Tonga government to introduce new employment legislation

11:11 am on 10 January 2006

The Labour Minister in Tonga says much-needed new employment legislation should be passed by the end of August

A draft of the Employment Relations bill will be presented to cabinet later this month.

Feleti Sevele says although employment and labour matters have run smoothly in the past, last years civil servants strike showed there was a need for change.

"The private employers have their own contracts with their employees, the government has had its code and then in 2002 it passed its Public Service Act but, I guess the strike last year did bring home the need to go further then what had been done so with all these things I guess it is just time to look further, to adapt and move on with it."

Dr Sevele says the new bill has been modelled on legislation in Fiji.
