Pro-coup lawyers want to remove me, claims Fiji military commander

Fiji's military commander says his removal is the agenda of some lawyers who have appeared on TV to say that his statements against the government are unconstitutional.

Commodore Bainimarama told the Fiji Sun last night that the lawyer and Conservative Alliance MP, Niko Nawaikula, should be charged for his involvement in the May 2000 political crisis.

Commodore Bainimarama says this is because Mr Nawaikula, along with his mentor and then NLTB general manager, Maika Qarikau, drafted the controversial Deed of Settlement document purporting to hand over all indigenous land to George Speight.

He says Speight's supporters fought against the army when it tried to restore law and order and formed the Conservative Alliance party afterwards to voice their agenda.

On a former attorney general in the Rabuka government Apaitia Seru, who has also spoken against him, Commodore Bainimarama says both Mr Seru and his wife lived in parliament during the May 2000 crisis to support Speight's illegal activities.

Commodore Bainimarama says he questions how these people can champion democracy and speak about constitutional matters when they themselves supported the illegal overthrow of an elected government.

On the lawyer Tevita Fa who spoke against him, Commodore Bainimarama says Mr Fa was the legal representative of the Fiji Peacekeepers Association, which wanted him removed as military commander after making completely false accusations.
