Cyclone Tam speeds up going south over open seas south of Niue

7:20 am on 14 January 2006

Forecasters predict Cyclone Tam will move further to the south of Niue over open seas this morning.

The cyclone is now accelerating as it moves south-south-east at about 45 kilometres an hour.

Forecasters say it's getting less likely that the storm will now intensify.

Reports from the French-administered island of Futuna say the cyclone knocked down several trees as it passed by on Thursday evening.

A yacht was also caught on the reef after it had been pushed there by strong winds.

Local police gendarmes were still busy yesterday helping to untangle the vessel from the shore.
