Makira government in Solomon Islands set to face motion of censure

2:27 pm on 19 January 2006

The opposition in the Makira-Ulawa assembly in Solomon Islands expects to move a motion of no confidence in the provincial government.

The opposition leader, Jackson Sunaone, has told Solomons radio the motion will be lodged against the current provincial executive led by Stephen Piringisau.

Mr Sunaone has joined criticism levelled against the provincial government relating to the recent protest against a logging operation on Makira.

The opposition leader was reluctant to comment on whether some members of the current provincial executive would defect.
