A former provincial governor in Papua New Guinea has been sentenced to 12 years in prison with hard labour for raping a 17-year-old girl in October 2004.

James Yali, who's 42, was sentenced in the National Court in the northern city of Madang after his conviction last month.

In sentencing, Justice David Cannings found Yali had not expressed remorse, but he had cooperated with police to an extent and there had been no aggravated physical violence.

Justice Cannings said there had been an exchange of a substantial amount of money following the incident but this had fallen short of being regarded as compensation.
