Future of stalled Honiara hotel development to be known in a week

Papua New Guinea property developer Kostas Constantinou will decide next week whether to pursue a stalled hotel development project in Solomon Islands.

Last year the company submitted plans to the government for a proposed hotel in Honiara.

The plan included a gaming room for 35 pokie machines as part of the five star hotel development.

The Foreign Investment Board had approved the venture before a legislation change restricted casino licences to two at any one time, ruling out the gaming room component of the new development.

Some Solomon Islanders also oppose the sale of the former government house to the developer as part of the hotel project.

The PNG company says the deal is unlikely to go ahead unless the government grants a casino licence.
