Telecom Samoa reached 25,000 mobile phone customers last week, an increase of over 21,000 in just two and a half years.

Managing Director of Telecom Samoa, David Borrill says it is a milestone to celebrate.

The company is the sole provider of cellular phone service in Samoa.

Mr Borrill says when he started in May 2003, there were only 4,000 customers and his goal at the time was to increase that number to 14,000 by May 2006.

He says the company was very pleased to have bettered that expectation by over a 100 per cent.

Mr Borrill, credited the achievement to the hard work by his team, the support from the Board and shareholders to directions taken by the company.

Another goal for Borrill is to make the company as " Samoan as humanly possible".

In the same two-and-a-half year period the staff has increased from eight to 20.

Telecom Samoa is presently building a GSM network that will provide the capabillity for internet connection and taking photos with the mobile phone.

Telecom Samoa hopes to have its GSM network online by June.
