Samoan political hopeful promises to lift restrictions on American Samoan travellers

4:30 pm on 31 January 2006

The deputy leader of the Samoa Democratic United Party Asiata Saleimoa Vaai says the party will abolish entry permits for American Samoans traveling to Samoa if it is elected to government.

Asiata made the statement while in American Samoa with members of the party to plan a fundraiser in the territory.

The DUP deputy leader says the entry permits are discriminatory.

"If we become government we are certainly going to get rid of that requirement for people from American Samoa having to get permits, because we find that rather distasteful in a sense. It is pure discrimination because people with New Zealand passports, Australian passports, they come in without any of this hassle. It seems to us someone just bearing a grudge. It's unfortunate - we are supposed to be brothers, cousins."
