8:44 pm on 31 January 2006

Kiribati's forrmer Presidennt, Teburoro Tito, says people are complaining to him about the growing dominance that Chinese have in the country's business community.

He says these people have written letters to the Chamber of Commerce, and Foreign Affairs Ministry without any response.

Mr Tito says the Chinese people must go through the Foreign Investment Act in order to set up businesses here but some are circumventing this by starting operations in a partnership with the locals.

He says the Chinese offer better prices, which is good for the people, but this undercuts the local businesses.

Mr Tito says the Government needs to step in and consider the public's long term interests.
