Fiji police to consult DPP about possible charges against alleged coup financiers

11:18 am on 1 February 2006

Fiji police are close to completing their investigations into those who financed the Speight coup.

Radio Fiji quotes the police commissioner, Andrew Hughes, as saying they are considering the evidence but would need to seek further advice from the director of public prosecutions.

Mr Hughes says the case has been a particularly difficult one to deal with because of the shadowy nature of the deals that were done and the reluctance of witnesses to come forward.

He says he believes there are still some gaps in the evidence but whether they can proceed with laying charges is a decision the DPP will need to make.

There are two files on individuals alleged to have financed the coup. END
