Fiji government writes off over US$4 million in tax arrears

The Fiji government has written off over US$4 million in tax arrears.

The finance minister, Ratu Jone Kubuabola, says the main reasons for the arrears ere migration, bankruptcy, liquidation, deaths and taxpayers who could not be traced.

The latest US$4 million write-off is in addition to US$5.4 million which was written off last year.

But the Fiji Times says political parties have criticised the decision saying migration is not a good reason for writing off taxes owed.

National Alliance official, Filipe Bole, says in other countries the authorities ensure all taxes are paid before people are allowed to migrate.
