Tonga to cut land allotments to meet population growth

12:02 pm on 2 February 2006

The Tongan government plans to reduce the size of tax and town allotments to cope with a population increase.

The acting lands minister, Tevita Malolo, says legal officers are working on an amendment to the land act because of the current economic situation.

Mr Malolo says because of the rapid increase in population one of the changes will be to lessen the size of town and tax allotments.

He says the government will also review its policy for abandoned town allotments to make sure enough land is left for growing of crops for a growing population.
