Samoa bans import of firearms

2:23 pm on 7 February 2006

Samoa has temporarily suspended the issuance of permits to import firearms and ammunition.

The suspension went into effect on January 31st.

The Minister of Police, Prisons and Fire Services, Ulu Vaomalo Kini, is quoted by the Samoa Observer saying that the suspension was made because there are enough firearms and ammunition now in the country.

The minister says the ministry periodically assesses if it is appropriate to allow more guns into the country.

Ulu said many illegal weapons have been brought into the country, and their presence have been revealed during violent incidents.
