The former governor of the Papua New Guinea province of Bougainville, Chief John Momis, is joining the University of the South Pacific for a year as a visiting fellow.

Mr Momis resigned last year from the National Parliament to contest the Presidency for the Autonomous Bougainville Government, but he was soundly defeated by Joseph Kabui.

He is to use the year to write his memoirs.

Last year Mr Momis received PNG's highest honour, recognizing his leading role in the development of the national constitution, contributions to the Bougainville peace process and service to religion, politics and the community.
