Relief supplies are on their way to thousands of people whose villages remain flooded in Papua New Guinea's Central Province as many families evacuate to higher ground.

Heavy rains in recent weeks has caused flooding and blocked the Hiritano Highway, the main road link between Port Moresby and Gulf Province.

Rice, flour and other dry food, along with tarpaulins and mosquito nets are being sent today by truck and will be helicopter to cut off villages.

The supplies have been organised by government officials and private donors in the PNG capital's business community.
