Hog cholera is suspected to be responsible for the deaths of dozens of pigs in Jayapura, the capital of the Indonesia province of Papua.

The Jakarta Post newspaper reports the virus has been evident in pigs in the area since October, but only recently had pigs begun dying almost daily.

The head of the provincial livestock office, AR Pintadewa, told the paper his office had sent biological samples from the dead pigs to national laboratories.

Mr Pintadewa said hog cholera had infected pigs in Timika in 2004, causing the deaths of about 7-thousand swine.
