New Zealand and Australia are giving Solomon Islands more than eight million US dollars in new grants to mend roads and bridges in Guadalcanal and Malaita.

The Asian Development Bank project was approved in 2001 and originally aimed to repair more than a hundred kilometres of roads and 14 bridges in the two provinces.

The new money allows an extra 45 kilometres of sealed and gravel roads to be repaired, as well as 37 more bridges and culverts.

The project's closing date is also extended from June 2007 to end of March 2008.
