Fiji PM to consider wish list presented by merged political party

7:23 am on 20 February 2006

Fiji's prime minister has undertaken to speedily address issues raised in a wish list given to him by the Conservative Alliance Matanitu Vanua party before it dissolved and joined with his ruling SDL.

Fiji TV reports that while details of the wish list remain secret, there are strong indications that they contain a request for the release of Conservative Alliance members jailed for coup related offences.

Laisenia Qarase says he will meet with his former Conservative Alliance colleagues who are now SDL members, to discuss their wishes and arrive at a consensus.

Fiji TV also revealed that just before the Conservative Alliance dissolved it had only 900-US dollars left in its bank balance.

The party's accounts showed that most of its money had been used to pay for the legal defence of its members, including cabinet ministers and the former deputy speaker, who were tried for coup related offences.
