The Fiji Peacekeepers Association has called on the government to lobby in international forums for former soldiers to be employed abroad.
The Fiji Times reports that the Association believes overseas employment would help keep soldiers who have been made redundant out of trouble.
The call follows former soldiers seeking employment illegally such as those who are now working for the failed money scheme operator on Bougainville, Noah Musingku.
The Association says since Fiji withdrew its troops from Lebanon which required 600 soldiers at its peak, there has been no significant deployment overseas of Fijian peacekeepers.
The military spokesman, Captain Neumi Leweni, says peacekeeping has evolved over the years and now requires more logistical support which depends on the government providing funding.
Currently there are 338 Fiji troops in Sinai and 135 in Iraq.
