French Polynesia court fines three Central Americans for illegal fishing

A court in French Polynesia has fined two Mexican fishermen and a Costa Rican for illegal fishing off Clipperton Island, a French possession off South America.

The news agency Tahitipresse reports each was fined US$100,000.

The two seiners and a trawler were surprised by a French frigate last April with about 1600 tonnes of illegally caught fish between them.

That's more fish than were seized in French Polynesian waters during the whole of last year.

France is still negotiating a fishing agreement with Mexico.
