Airports Fiji Limited has announced plans to spend nearly US$575,000 to upgrade Savusavu Airport, with work expected to start mid-year.

The Fiji Times reports that upgrading works includes the construction of a new terminal building, a new apron, access roads and car parks.

A local hotel owner says the upgrading works had been promised for a long time and it was good that it was finally happening.

Savusavu Hot Springs Hotel director Tim Eden says the upgrade is long overdue and had been promised three years ago.

Mr Eden says AFL had done quick fix jobs on the airport to allow for another aircraft to land.

He says it was hindering growth in Savusavu so the upgrade of the airport will definitely be good.

Aircraft movement in Savusavu is the third highest in the country.

AFL has also announced upgrading works at Labasa Airport which will begin next year.
