American Samoa scheme to use by-catch from fish longliners

9:21 am on 3 March 2006

The Pago Pago Community Fisheries is looking to turn the by-catch fish products of longliners into a range of fish products for sale at the market.

Some of the fish specialties include fish sausages, katsu masimasi, Cajun sashimi and smoked marlin.

Normally this bycatch which is already dead fish is discarded.

Using a grant from the Western Pacific Fisheries Council, the company has done its feasibility study and is now awaiting a permit to set up shop.

Henry Sesepasara said with the bird flu scare, fish is a welcome alternative.
