American Samoa has been awarded a grant of US$40,000 by the US Department of Justice to provide drug treatment to offenders at the Tafuna Correctional Facility.

The Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Justice Programs Regina Schofield, says breaking the link between drugs and crime is a critical step in the transition of offenders from prisons to their communities.

Ms Schofield says the awards can help make communities safer and give inmates the opportunity to lead lives free from drugs.
