Urban town planning under way for Tonga

2:06 pm on 7 March 2006

An urban and a rural area plan for Tonga is being developed by a team from Global Works International Project Development.

Matangi Tonga reports that there are two stages to the project with the first focussed on a strategic view to uncover what the key issues are and what the strategy should be.

The team leader, Richard Mabbitt, they will provide a proper planning framework for the urban areas of Nuku'alofa, Neiafu and Pangai.

It will include water supply, drainage and sanitation to take into account the growth of the areas.

Mr Mabbitt says the urban areas can't be looked at in isolation so the surrounding rural areas will also be assessed.

It's the first time a comprehensive integrated urban development project has been undertaken.
