Niue's new hospital to be opened next week

Niue's new hospital, which is to be opened next week by New Zealand foreign minister, Winston Peters, is to be called Niue Foou Hospital.

The hospital has been built after Niue's previous facility was destroyed by Cyclone Heta more than two years ago.

The Cabinet had wanted to name it the Young Vivian and Helen Clark Hospital to acknowledge New Zealand's assistance to the island.

There has been opposition on the island to the proposed name.

The Premier of Niue, Young Vivian, says the New Zealand Prime Minister also asked for a different name to be used.

He says Niue Foou Hospital, which means literally Niue's new hospital, helps to mark the fresh start for health services on the island.
