The Supervisor of Elections in Fiji says registered voters who don't turn up to vote could face a maximum fine of US$280.

Semesa Karavaki told Fijilive the minimum fine for not voting would be US$11, but would increase when the second and third letter was sent.

Voters who fail to vote would be asked to explain why they did not and the Elections Office would determine whether they should be fined.

Mr Karavaki says there are expected to be about a thousand polling stations for the vote in the second week of May.
