The New Caledonian government has launched a tourism marketing office in Auckland to increase the number of its New Zealand visitors by almost a third in the next six years.
Most of the tourists in New Caledonia are from France and Japan and only about six and a half thousand New Zealanders are visiting New Caledonia each year.
New Caledonia Tourism South manager, Simon Duffy, says his office will try to increase the number to 15,000 by 2011.
"What will change for New Zealanders is something new. New Caledonia has not been a tourism destination. And that goes back to having the same government for 25 years. There wasn't not a strong emphasis on tourism, but there is now. And that's for New Zealanders the likes of better accommodation, better packages, better pricing. We wish to introduce new market segments."
Simon Duffy says they want to offer better deals in recreational as well as in adventure tourism.
