Fiji police hint at possible foreign funding for 2000 coup

8:22 pm on 15 March 2006

Fiji's police commissioner says ongoing investigations into the May 2000 coup has found indications that funds were brought in from off-shore.

Andrew Hughes says there are an outstanding number of coup files now with the Public Prosecutions Office or DPP, and included among those is information about finances of the coup.

He says more evidence is being collected in relation to those briefs with the DPP and his office is awaiting an outcome.

But he says some evidence on the coup funding has been hard to gather because there were no cheques written, and cash was used.

And, he says inquiries have led to other new information.

"there were some indicators that funds may have come from offshore, but they are very tenuous - a lot more information and intelligence than evidence."

Andrew Hughes says investigations will continue.
