Some Fiji conservatives opt to stand as independents

4:08 pm on 21 March 2006

Some members of the Fiji Conservative Alliance party say they will stand as independent candidates in the upcoming general election.

The group's interim secretary, Lasarusa Sovea, says they are unhappy with the party's decision to merge with the ruling SDL party.

Mr Sovea says his group is awaiting the return from Taiwan the party's secretary general, Ratu Josefa Dimuri.

Mr Sovea says the group consists of 20 people, but he says they could not register yet.

"We are trying to contain the name Conservative Alliance, but we will find that out when he gets back this weekend from Taiwan. But I doubt that they will surrender the name to us. So we will probably stand as Coalition of Independent Conservatives. We would like to use that name instead of Conservative Alliance if they do not allow us that."
