Fiji's Nationalist Vanua Tako Lavo Party has invited the military commander, Commodore Bainimarama, to contest the coming general elections under their banner.

The Daily Post reports that the party general secretary and May 2000 coup convict, Iliesa Duvuloco, has invited Commodore Bainimarama and his senior officers to resign from the military and join his party.

Commenting on the military's truth and justice campaign, Mr Duvuloco says they cannot both be in the military and at the same time participate in politics.

Mr Duvuloco says it is not the military's business to talk politics.

The military insists that its truth and justice campaign is part of its ongoing mission to inform and educate people about unscrupulous politicians.

A senior military spokesman, Lt Col Orisi Rabukawaqa, says they do not want a repeat of the situation arising out of the May 2000 coup when the military had to rescue the country from chaos and restore law and order.
