Samoa's Attorney General, Brenda Heather Latu, says the opening of the Samoa consulate in American Samoa gives formal recognition that Samoa's relationship with American Samoa is such that it now deserves formal legal status.

She said although the two Samoas have close blood ties sharing one language and culture, the consulate properly signifies the nature and importance of international relations by sovereign governments.

American Samoa Governor, Togiola Tulafono, who also attended the opening, said the new consulate will help facilitate travel between the two sides and enhance the spirit of cooperation in economic development that will be mutually beneficial for all Samoans

Headed by Samoa's Chief Executive Officer for Immigration, Mataafa Tomasi, the consulate is the only diplomatic mission to be set up in American Samoa.
