Greenpeace says China launders vast amounts of PNG timber

A Greenpeace report says China is at the centre of laundering vast amounts of illegal timber from Papua New Guinea's forests.

The report documents illegally logged timber shipped to China for domestic consumption and export to satisfy the demand for inexpensive wood products.

Greenpeace investigators say they have clearly identified PNG logs at veneer and plywood mills in China which came from PNG concessions being illegally logged by Malaysian timber company Rimbunan Hijau and other logging companies.

PNG forest campaigner, Dorothy Tekwie, says China's rapidly expanding demand for cheap wood products is taking its toll across Asia Pacific's Paradise Forests.

She says the future of PNG's forest is dependent on China's stance on combating illegal and unsustainable logging.
