American Samoa senate reviews government finances

8:02 am on 30 March 2006

The American Samoa Senate is reviewing government financial records at the Territorial Office of Fiscal Reform while it awaits a contempt citation to be served on its manager.

Senate legal counsel Roy Hall says if Jack Kachmarik's office cooperates in allowing access and copying at no charge to the Senate he will recommend to the Senate membership that no action be taken on the contempt.

During a Senate investigative hearing last month, Mr Kachmarik told the committee that he was instructed by the Governor and Attorney General's offices not to release any documents subpoenaed by the Senate until it pays around 30-thousand US dollars to cover reproduction costs.

The Senate is currently investigating the government's finances that goes back to 2003.
